A Tribute to Carla Riechman !

Today, as I landed at Reagan Washington DC Airport, I received heartbreaking news.

About eight years ago, I landed at the same airport, and Carla Riechman came to pick me up. I met Carla over a decade ago—perhaps even longer—on Facebook. She stood out immediately. An older soul with the heart of a child, she wore an Apple Watch back when hardly anyone did, laughed freely, and was making videos at a time when videos weren’t yet the norm.

Our friendship began when I saw a student interview her and watched it with great interest. I messaged her afterward to thank her and wish her a happy birthday. That simple gesture led to a deep and meaningful friendship.

At my request, Carla began teaching English to Palestinians online—daily. Over the years, at least a million people learned from her, watching her show with admiration and affection.

She even traveled to Pakistan, stayed at Rehan School for a month, and later moved to her own home in Bahria Town, Karachi. She bought a car and was lovingly cared for by Shahrukh. She always told me, “Don’t worry—I won’t die before 80.”

But today, she is no longer with us.

Carla was a brave woman, full of life, passion, and a childlike spirit. She will forever be remembered for her efforts to break down barriers between people, cultures, and generations.

We will be holding a memorial in her honor on Saturday, May 31, at Rehan School, Korangi Campus. All are welcome to join and share a few words about her remarkable life.

We also plan to establish a Memorial Museum in her name, so her story can continue to inspire others to challenge boundaries—just as she did.

May she rest in peace.
She will always live on in the hearts of those she touched.
