Today is Bangladeshs "শহীদ বুদ্ধিজীবী দিবস" or Martyred Intellectuals Day. On this day of 1971, when the liberation war was coming to an end and surrender was inevitable, the Pakistani forces and the local Rajakars carried out a planned annihilation of Bangladeshs scholarly class in order to cripple a newborn nation intellectually. They knocked on the doors of academics, teachers, litterateur, doctors, engineers, journalists and other eminent personalities, and dragged them out of their houses blindfolded. Two days later after the independence of Bangladesh, the bodies of these brilliant people were found in various killing grounds around Dhaka.
Today we celebrate the lives and works of these luminaries.
