  • Zakia Sarwar is a distinguished Pakistani educator and a pioneering figure in English language teaching. She co-founded the Society of Pakistan English Language Teachers (SPELT), serving as its Honorary Executive Director, and has been instrumental in advancing English language education in Pakistan.  

    Educated at the University of Leeds, UK, in 1992 and the University of Sydney, Australia, in 1982, Sarwar has significantly contributed to curriculum development and teacher training. She has served as a convener and author for the Sindh Textbook Board and as a visiting faculty member at the Pakistan Institute of Public Administration. Her research focuses on areas such as teaching writing in under-resourced institutions, English as a foreign language with limited resources, curriculum negotiation, and project-based learning. 

    Sarwar’s dedication has earned her numerous accolades, including the Award for Excellence at Government PECHS College for Women and the Solidarity Award from the International Association of Language Academies (IALA) World Congress for presenting her research findings in Singapore. She also received the TOEFL Policy Council Award at the TESOL Convention 2000 in Vancouver. 

    Through her extensive work with SPELT and other educational initiatives, Zakia Sarwar has played a vital role in enhancing the quality of English language teaching in Pakistan, promoting learner autonomy, and supporting teachers in challenging environments.
