    To
    Umar Saif
    Minister it Pakistan

Subject: Request to Reevaluate Import Tariffs and Facilitate Economical Chromebook Imports for Pakistani Students

    Honorable Minister Umar Saif,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. As an advocate for the technological empowerment of Pakistans youth, I wish to address a pressing issue that hinders our students access to affordable digital tools.

Across the globe, especially in the USA, there is an abundance of Chromebooks and other under-$50 laptops that are being discarded or deemed as waste. These devices are channeled to Dubai for sorting and then find their way into Pakistan. Regrettably, the current import mechanism drastically escalates the costs. A device starting at zero dollars in the USA gets marked up to $10 in Dubai for sorting, plus $15 for courier charges to Pakistan, followed by retail profit margins. As a result, a device that should be priced around 3000 rupees for our students surges to 12000 rupees.

To delve deeper into this challenge, I consulted with two clearing agents to understand the import tariffs. I was informed that due to customs tariffs set 12 years ago, these machines are valued at a staggering $270 per unit. This antiquated valuation makes it virtually impossible to legally and affordably import them through standard channels. As a workaround, many resort to the hand baggage route, which, while practical, is unfortunately against the law.

Chromebooks, despite their economical pricing, are potent educational tools. They can transform the learning landscape, especially for those experiencing computer usage for the first time. The potential for educational enhancement, increased digital literacy, and bridging the digital divide is vast.

I earnestly request you to revisit and update these outdated customs valuations. By facilitating a smoother, lawful, and cost-effective import mechanism for these devices, we can equip our youth with the digital resources they rightly deserve.

Your proactive involvement can be a beacon of change, ensuring every young Pakistani has the tools to thrive in an increasingly digital global landscape.

Thank you for considering this urgent appeal. I trust in your commitment to the betterment of our nations youth and anticipate a favorable resolution.

    Warm regards,

    Rehan Allahwala.
