The Journey of Ghazala Hashmi — From Teacher to Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor
Ghazala Hashmi was born in Hyderabad, India, in 1964. When she was just four years old, her family moved to the United States, settling in Georgia. Like many immigrant families, they came with hope, faith, and a desire for better opportunities.
She grew up in Georgia and earned her Bachelor’s degree in English from Georgia Southern University, later completing her Ph.D. in American Literature from Emory University.
For almost 30 years, Ghazala worked in higher education — teaching, mentoring, and leading academic programs near Richmond, Virginia. Her experience as an educator deeply shaped her views on equality and opportunity.
In 2019, she ran for the Virginia State Senate as a Democrat from the Richmond suburbs. Against strong odds, she defeated the Republican incumbent Glen Sturtevant, becoming the first Muslim and first Indian-American woman ever elected to the Virginia Senate.
During her time in the Senate, she focused on education, healthcare, and environmental protection. She also supported measures related to reproductive rights, gun safety, and voting access.
In November 2025, major news networks including CNN and the Associated Press projected Ghazala Hashmi as the winner of the Virginia Lieutenant Governor race, defeating Republican John Reid.
Her election marks a significant milestone:
