I asked for wisdom, and God gave me problems...
I asked for courage, and God gave me danger...
I asked for love, and God gave me troubled people...
We never get what we ask for. That’s especially true for entrepreneurs because we’ve chosen a life far away from paved roads and traffic lights. One step removed from rule books and “how to” manuals. We pave the roads. We write the manuals.
That also means we take the hits. We endure the beatings. We absorb the losses. We face the ridicule. We receive the blame. We brave the unknown. We experience the stress. We feel the pressure. We know the loneliness. We tolerate disbelief. We weather the storms.
Because we asked for it, it could be no other way. If finding new ways to do things was easy, everyone would do it. If solving problems was easy, they wouldn’t be problems. If creating were easy, whatever you want to create would already exist. It can’t be easy.
It’s the price you pay to be an entrepreneur, and it’s beautiful. The beauty is in the counterweight: For every pain unit, providence has allotted a measure of glory. And that glory is multiplied by a factor equal to the leverage we’ve chosen to build for ourselves.
We literally create our own destiny. And the more resistance and stressors, the more naysayers and enemies, the more hurdles and challenges, the higher the payoff. And that payoff isn’t experienced in equal measure to the challenges. It’s compounded by many multiples.
That’s why entrepreneurs rule the world, for better or worse. It has been and always will be true. Irrespective of laws and regulations, taxes and tolls, rules and restrictions, it doesn’t matter. We can’t be shackled. By literal definition, we find a way. That’s what entrepreneurs do.
So, the next time you find yourself tempted with that familiar “woe is me” feeling, I offer you a salve: This is exactly right. It’s exactly where you’re supposed to be. You’re paying the price. You’re doing the work. You’re making progress, even if you can’t see it.
Just. Don’t. Give. Up.
