Nintendo just published record-breaking results.

… but most people don’t know their story.

The company was founded 134 years ago, in a small side street in Kyoto, Japan.

Their product?

Hand-made playing card.

77 years later they decided move into physical toys.

… and then in 1975, nearly a century after being founded, they made a huge bet that would define the future of their company and what they known for today.

Their first video game system.

Much is written about companies that fail to reinvent themselves - Blockbuster, Kodak etc. - but we rarely celebrate the ones that did.

Samsung started as a grocery business.
Nokia was a paper mill.
American Express delivered mail.
Western Union offered telegrams.
Shell sold... decorative seashells.

As someone who worked most of my career in start-ups and much younger tech companies, I find stories like this fascinating.

Satya Nadella once said “Longevity in business is about being able to reinvent yourself”.

Nintendo is one of my favourite examples.
