Food preservation was a necessity for many cultures and civilizations. Understanding how to preserve food was necessary for survival and it’s one of the most basic skills we have.
Since the dawn of time, humankind has looked for ways to preserve the foods that make up our diet. This gave Indigenous tribes a means of carrying over some excess harvest for lean times later in the year or if there was a bad winter where it was hard to get to food sources such as fruit, vegetables, and meat. This would allow them to have extra food stored away safely so they would not go hungry during rough times.
We can learn so much from these ancient practices. In the comforts of our modern world, we often forget the importance of safe and reliable food sources. Even in the era of quick and accessible food, there are many reasons to learn to preserve your own food. Going back to our roots is a way to be more self-sufficient, along with boosting our health and connecting to the history of the Earth.
Happy Indigenous peoples day although this holiday doesn’t do much to the actual rights and protection of Indigenous peoples around the world - allow this to be an invitation to get involved and support indigenous communities one way or another (actively!!!) Educate yourself on the land you stand on, support indigenous makers/creators/activists/artists and beyond.
