New reverts and Muslims who should revert. Many Muslims are so committed to converting others, yet, they lack compassion toward these converts. They don't appreciate the struggle that the new converts face. In addition, they overwhelm the new converts with opinions that are not essential to follow. Islam to some of us is what they learned at home and they want the new convert to change his/her name, change their lifestyle, leaving behind old friends, and wear what they consider Islamic cloth. Even his beard has to be like theirs, and her head cover has to meet the sisters' approval. Those Muslims are looking for carbon copies of themselves. This is not Islam, it is rather a cultural bias they are trying to impose in the name of Islam. They forget that Allah described believers as companionate toward each others. (48:29) It behooves us to remember God's advice to our beloved Prophetﷺ : "By God’s mercy, you [Messenger] were gentle toward them. If you had been rude and hard-hearted, they would have turned away from you." (03:159) Sayyida `Aisha narrated: Whenever Allah's Messenger was given the choice between two matters he would choose the easier of the two as long as it was not offensive to do so, but if it was offensive, he would stay away from it. (See Hadith No. 760. Vol. 4) Islam is compassion toward others who chose freely to join our community. If you don't show them understanding, if you are not gentle, and merciful they will leave and some are leaving. We, as a community are to blame because we failed to give them the support they needed and they deserve. Islam my brothers and sisters is about unity, not conformity. Allow the new convert time to slowly learn what you take for granted. More importantly, encourage them to think about what you practice as Islam, to ask questions, and to critique it. After all, they are coming with fresh eyes and they can spot the difference between the purity of Islam as they're studying it and our cultural practices. Welcoming the new converts right after they declare their shahada is nice, but maintaining a balanced and warm relationship with them, is much more difficult.
