You may be surprised to learn this that Queen of England is my cousin! This study was recently published and the authors generated the family tree of the Queen which goes back to Prophet Mohammad (pbuh).
From a strictly evolutionary standpoint, our job is to propagate as many of our genes as possible. We share 50% of our genes with our mother and father or with any offspring. Our direct cousins, share 12.5% of our genes. If we don’t have have nephews and nieces, any care that we will put into our cousins will helps to pass on part of the genetic material that is us.
Interesting thing is that the first cousins who have children together increase the number of genes that they pass on; it may also help increase family unity, retain familial wealth and ensures similar cultural and religious views within the union. The interesting thing is that narrative also holds true for many animal species.
