What can happen in two and a half years? By Hassan Syed

I am writing this for my fellow Overseas Pakistanis that are always ready to help Pakistan in whichever way they can. I hope that my story encourages Overseas Pakistanis in contributing more towards the development of knowledge economy in Pakistan. Please follow the link towards the end of this article.

Two and half years ago, I came to Pakistan with an idea to create awareness about the future and how Pakistan can create wealth through innovation and entrepreneurship by focusing on 7 emerging technologies. These 7 emerging technologies are about to create an economic impact of 50 trillion dollars. My dream is to create 12 innovation areas in 12 top cities in Pakistan that will focus on these 7 emerging technologies and train the younger generations in these technologies and entrepreneurship.

My vision is that Pakistan shall claim her fair share of this action proportionate to her population, which is 3% of the worlds population. Using this formula, we shall be able to claim 1.5 trillion dollars in the global knowledge economy through innovation in these emerging technologies. In my mind, the path to this innovation is through an entrepreneurial mindset.

Two and half years later, we have more than 65,000 students enrolled in our entrepreneurship training program from more than 130 universities. This program started only 14 months ago in collaboration with 16 universities. As of today, more than 5,000 students have already graduated from the program and over 2,000 are working on their startup ideas. Additionally, over 5,000 students have gone through my emerging technologies and future of jobs workshop.

The path to claim our share of the global knowledge economy requires us to develop a strong innovation ecosystem around the key emerging technologies.

During my time as the advisor the Federal Minister for Science and Technology, I proposed #ThinkFuture program that is based on establishing 12 innovation areas, focusing on 7 emerging technologies. In October 2020, the National University of Science and Technology was directed by the Federal Minister of Science and Technology to follow the 7 emerging technologies agenda and have setup an industry/academia committee along the lines of these technologies. In March 2021, this program was announced by the Federal Minister of S&T Chaudhry Fawad Hussain.

Similarly, the need for a strong entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem was conveyed and accepted at the highest level in Pakistani government under the patronage of the Honorable President Dr. Arif Alvi. Under his guidance and under the leadership of the Federal IT Minister, Syed Amin Ul Haque, and in collaboration with the Ministry Of IT & Telecom, Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology and Pakistan Software Export Board, National Idea Bank was launched in February 2021. This is a major development towards creating a culture innovation by recognizing people for their good ideas and by creating a support system for innovative ideas. National Idea Bank will provide a level of protection against idea theft and will help innovators in getting recognition through independent judges.

In September 2020, I started organizing a network of Overseas Pakistanis to invest their intellectual, experience, social, and financial capital to support 100 technology startups by 2023. Now fully operational, this group of 80+ Overseas Pakistanis has started playing a leading role in the development of innovation areas in 12 cities.

Starting April 2021, I was appointed the Convener of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry CSR Committee in Innovation and Entrepreneurship by the FPCCI President, Mian Nasser Hyatt Maggo. In the first committee meeting, it was agreed to align the industry innovation with the Honorable President’s agenda.

Despite many challenges along the way, it is amazing to see the government, academia, and industry on the same page today and aligned well behind a single vision.

Pakistan has limited window of opportunity to get her act together in the knowledge age and this cannot be done without the intellect and expertise of Overseas Pakistanis. My friends and I have built a platform that connects Overseas Pakistanis directly to the innovation ecosystem in Pakistan. You now can contribute your intellectual, social, and financial capital in the development of innovative new ventures, benefiting from their success while contributing towards a better future for Pakistan.

You can start contributing towards the growth of knowledge economy in Pakistan by registering today with the National Idea Bank (https://nibpk.org) as an innovator.
