There are 58 universities in Istanbul; 13 of them are State and 45 are Private. Istanbul university is the oldest one, not only of Istanbul or of Turkey, but also one of the world's. It was founded in the form of madrasa (theological school) by Sultan Mehmet II after he conquered Constantinople.
