Overcoming Fear — One Conversation at a Time
Growing up in Pakistan, many of us were taught — consciously or unconsciously — to fear the police. That fear stayed with me for decades. My first real interaction with police outside Pakistan was in Singapore when I was 20. They were kind, respectful, and professional — very different from what I had been taught to expect.
Yet, even at 50+, I still feel that old fear sometimes. Today, while traveling, I saw two policewomen and decided to face that fear once again. I walked up, smiled, and asked if I could take a photo with them as a tourist. They happily agreed.
Every time I do this, I feel a little freer.
So next time you see a police officer — anywhere in the world — take a deep breath and say hello. Remember: most of them are here to help, to protect, and to keep our communities safe.
Thank you to all the policemen and policewomen around the world for your service, kindness, and dedication.
