“Hello everybody out there using MINIX —
I’m doing a free operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like GNU)…”
He called it Freax at first (yes, seriously), but the guy running the download server thought “Linux” sounded better.
And so — accidentally — it was named after Linus himself.

Developers across the globe read his message. Some were curious.
Some were skeptical.
But some said, “Hey, I want to help.”
And so, piece by piece, line by line, strangers from different continents came together to build the operating system Linus had only dreamed of.
