    Summary

**The Clever Plan of Mulla Nasrudin**

Once upon a time, **Mulla Nasrudin** was sitting outside his house when he heard a loud noise coming from the marketplace.

A rich merchant had lost a valuable bag of gold coins.

He searched everywhere but could not find it.

The merchant announced, “I will give a big reward to anyone who finds my gold!”

    Many people began searching.

    Nasrudin also decided to help.

He thought for a moment and made a clever plan.

He went to the marketplace and loudly said, “I know where the missing gold is!”

    Everyone gathered around him.

The merchant quickly asked, “Where is it?”

Nasrudin smiled and said, “First, everyone who was near the marketplace must stand in a line.”

    The people followed his instructions.

Then Nasrudin carefully watched their faces.

Suddenly, one man became nervous and tried to leave.

Nasrudin pointed at him and said, “Stop! Why are you leaving?”

The man became frightened and admitted that he had found the bag and wanted to keep the gold for himself.

The merchant got his gold back.

Everyone praised Nasrudin for his clever idea.

The merchant asked, “How did you know who had the gold?”

    Nasrudin laughed and replied:

“I did not know who had it. **I only created a situation where the guilty person would reveal himself!**”

Everyone was amazed by his cleverness.

Nasrudin smiled and walked home happily.

  • The Wisdom of Change: From Talking to Doing

Rumi’s timeless words remind us of a truth many of us forget: real change begins not out there, but within. When we are young and full of ambition, it is easy to believe that the world’s problems—poverty, inequality, corruption, war, climate change—can be solved if only others would listen, if only leaders would act, if only the system would change. That is cleverness. But wisdom comes when we realize that waiting for “others” is a way of escaping our own responsibility.

The world today is full of clever talkers. Social media feeds are flooded with opinions, complaints, and criticisms. We blame governments, corporations, societies, and systems. But how often do we look into the mirror and ask: What am I doing with my own time, my own talents, my own hands?

The truth is that the problems of the world are nothing more than the sum of our individual inactions. Corruption persists because individuals choose shortcuts. Poverty persists because we walk past those in need. Climate change accelerates because we choose convenience over responsibility. Every great problem is not just “out there”—it is in our daily choices.

This is where Rumi’s wisdom becomes a call to action. If I change myself—if I choose honesty, kindness, discipline, and responsibility—then I become a seed of change. If millions of us change ourselves, then the world inevitably changes too. Talking about the world’s problems without changing ourselves is like shouting at the fire while refusing to bring water.

We must move from being clever talkers to wise doers. Instead of wasting hours debating what leaders should do, invest those hours in solving a problem in your own street, your own school, your own neighborhood. Mentor one child. Plant one tree. Start one small business. Pick up one piece of trash. These actions may seem small, but multiplied by millions, they are what truly transform nations.

The wise understand that responsibility is not a burden—it is freedom. When I take responsibility, I no longer wait for someone else. I no longer feel helpless. I am no longer trapped in endless talk. Instead, I am part of the solution.

So let us honor Rumi’s wisdom. Let us stop talking endlessly about what is wrong with the world. Let us begin, today, to change ourselves—our habits, our time, our priorities. The world will not be saved by cleverness. It will be saved by wisdom, by responsibility, and by action.

  • Mullah Nasruddins tales, known for their wit and wisdom, have parallels in various cultures, featuring characters who use humor and cleverness to highlight truths or critique societal norms. Here are a few similar figures and their stories:

    1. **Juha (Middle Eastern Folklore)**: Juha, like Nasruddin, is a character in Middle Eastern folklore known for his wit. In one popular tale, Juha carries his door on his back after his house is robbed. When asked why, he explains that since the thieves have already taken everything inside, hes afraid they might come back for the door.

    2. **Hodja (Turkish Folklore)**: Hodja stories are very similar to those of Nasruddin. One famous story involves Hodja riding his donkey backwards. When asked why, he explains that this way, either he or the donkey can see where theyre going.

    3. **Brer Rabbit (African-American Folklore)**: Brer Rabbit is a trickster figure who often outsmarts larger animals. In the famous "Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby" story, he cleverly tricks Brer Fox who tries to capture him using a tar doll.

    4. **Eulenspiegel (German Folklore)**: Till Eulenspiegel was a jester and trickster. In one story, hes asked to ride a horse to its new owner but instead rides it to his home, arguing that he was only told to ride it, not to deliver it.

    5. **Panchatantra Tales (Indian Folklore)**: These are ancient Indian fables featuring animals in human-like situations. The stories, such as "The Monkey and the Crocodile", often carry moral lessons and reflect on human nature and society.

    6. **Anansi (West African and Caribbean Folklore)**: Anansi is a spider who often takes the form of a man. In one story, Anansi, the king of all stories, gains the right to tell stories by completing a series of impossible tasks set by the Sky God.

These stories, like those of Nasruddin, use humor and cleverness to make larger points about human nature and society, and have been passed down through generations in various cultures.
