In the past five years, Pakistan’s startup ecosystem has grown from a nascent colony to a self-sustaining environment. Zameen, an online real estate startup based in Lahore, has ridden that startup wave in developing a Zillow-like app and website that allows users to search and buy real estate listings in Pakistan’s largest cities.

Like many famous U.S. internet companies, Zameen started with a gamble. In 2006, Zeeshan Ali Khan and his brother left their e-commerce business in the United Kingdom to move to Pakistan and started Zameen in their bedrooms. Back then, online-only services in Pakistan were rare, but Ali Khan followed the money coming into Pakistani real estate from expats living abroad—a million of whom lived in the United Kingdom. Now Zameen employees 500 people and has offices in nearly all major cities in Pakistan.

“Zameen.com came into being when we realised there was a desperate need for a trustworthy online real estate enterprise in Pakistan, especially given the importance the average Pakistani attaches to property,” Ali Khan tells Newsweek in an email. “Back then the state of internet infrastructure in Pakistan was extremely poor but the offline property market was exploding. Facilitated by large investments from the Pakistani diaspora, people found that investing in real estate would earn them significant returns.”

Pakistan’s fast-growing economy and, perhaps more importantly, large English-speaking population has provided a backbone to encourage startups to form and work with foreign companies.

The country has seen startup hubs form around elite universities in cities like Lahore and Karachi—similar to Boston and San Francisco—in the last few years. The Punjab province, where Lahore is located, has been the major hotspot for startups in Pakistan. Plan9, the Punjab provincial government-run technology incubator, hosts over 80 startups. Ali Khan believes there are 140 startups in Lahore, a city of 5 million people.

But Pakistani startups are still minnows compared to those in Silicon Valley. Cultural and economic norms, like being predominantly reliant on cash for transactions, are big obstacles for startups. Despite leading the South Asian region in consumers using mobile payments, only 9 percent of Pakistani men and 2 percent of women have used mobile phones for money transfers. Around 39 percent of Americans have used mobile banking in 2015, according to a report from the Federal Reserve.

To accommodate its cash-based users, Zameen employs motorcycle riders to collect payments from Zameen agents across 30 Pakistani cities in person. “The situation is improving, and a lot of people are beginning to feel more comfortable with online payments and even mobile transactions,” says Ali Khan.

Earning public trust for a little-known startup—a concept now just becoming understood in Pakistan—was a big challenge as well. When Zameen began, it discovered most of the Pakistani property market undocumented, and reliable data was nearly non-existent.

Pakistani consumers, including Ali Khan’s family, had a hard time becoming comfortable with Zameen and its Silicon Valley-inspired ideas. “My family was a little apprehensive when I told them I wanted to start a business of my own,” Ali Khan says. “Today however, the attitudes have greatly changed, thanks to the startup ecosystem that is supporting the startup culture in Pakistan.”

The two biggest hurdles Zameen and fellow startups face are the low penetration rates of 3G/4G mobile Internet and the lack of support from its government. In 2015, only 22 million out of 182 million Pakistanis had 3G/4G technology, leaving little room for startups to continue growing and scale upwards with their online services.

Infrastructural issues like 3G/4G technology need the government’s help, but such support has been lacking, according to Ali Khan.

What is Arthakranti Proposal and who has given the proposal?

“Arthakranti Proposal” has been given by a Pune (Maharashtra) based “Arthakranti Sansthan” which is an Economic Advisory body constituted by a group of Chartered Accountants and Engineers. The fundamental framework has been patented by the Sansthan.

Arthakranti Proposal is an effective and guaranteed solution of Black Money Generation, Price rise and Inflation, Corruption, Fiscal Deficit, Unemployment, Ransom, GDP and industrial growth, terrorism and good governance.

What is in the Proposal ?

“Arthakranti Proposal has FIVE point of actions simultaneously.

(1) Scrap all 56 Taxes including income tax excluding import duty.

(2) Recall and scrap high denomination currencies of 1000, 500 and 100 rupees.

(3) All high value transaction to be made only through banking system like cheque, DD, online and electronic.

(4) Fix limit of cash transaction and no taxing on cash transaction.

(5) For Govt. revenue collection introduce single point tax system through banking system – Banking Transaction Tax (2% to 0.7%) on only Credit Amount

Important Points to note:

(1) As on today total banking transaction is more than 2.7 lakh crores per day say more than 800 lakh crores annually.

(2) Less than 20% transaction is made through banking system as on today and more than 80% transaction made in cash only, which is not traceable.

(3) 78% of Indian population spend less than 20/- rupees daily why they need 1000/- rupee note.

What will happen if All FIFTY SIX Taxes including income tax scrapped :

(1) Salaried people will bring home more money which will increase purchasing power of the family.

(2) All commodities including Petrol, Diesel, FMCG will become cheaper by 35% to 52% .

(3) No question of Tax evasion so no black money generation.

(4) Business sector will get boosted. So self employment.

What will happen if 1000/ 500/ 100 Rupees currency notes recalled and scrapped :

(1) Corruption through cash will stopped 100%.

(2) Black money will be either converted to white or will vanish as billions of 1000/500/100 currency notes hidden in bags without use will become simple pieces of papers.

(3) Unaccounted hidden huge cash is skyrocketing the prices of properties, land, houses, jewellery etc and hard earned money is loosing its value; this trend will stop immediately.

(4) Kidnapping and ransom, “Supari killing” will stop.

(5) Terrorism supported by cash transaction will stop.

(6) Cannot buy high value property in cash showing very less registry prices.

(7) Circulation of “Fake Currency” will stop because fake currency printing for less value notes will not be viable.

What will happen when Banking Transaction Tax (2% to 0.7%) is implemented :

(1) As on today if BTT is implemented govt can fetch 800 x 2% = 16 lakh crore where as current taxing system is generating less than 14 lakh crore revenue.

(2)When 50% of total transaction will be covered by BTT sizing 2000 to 2500 lakh crores, Govt will need to fix BTT as low as 1% to 0.7% and this will boost again banking transaction many fold.

(3) No separate machinery like income tax department will be needed and tax amount will directly deposited in State/Central/District administration account immediately.

(4) As transaction tax amount will be very less, public will prefer it instead paying huge amount against directly/indirectly FIFTY SIX taxes.

(5) There will be no tax evasion and govt will get huge revenue for development and employment generation.

(6) For any special revenue for special projects, govt can slightly raise BTT say from 1% to 1.2% and this 0.2% increase will generate 4,00,000 crores additional fund.

Effects, if implemented today :

(01)Prices of all things will come down.

(02)Salaried people will get more cash in hand.

(03)Purchasing power of Society will increase.

(04)Demand will boost, so will production and industrialisation and ultimately more employment opportunity for youth.

(05) Surplus revenue to the govt for effective health/ education/ infrastructure/ security/ social works.

(06) Cheaper and easy loans from banks, interest rate will come down.

(07) Tendency of society will changes from scarcity to quantity.

(08) Spare money for political system for clean politics,

(09) Prices of land/ property will come down,

(10) No need to export beef to cover up trade deficit

(11) Sufficient fund for research and development.

(12) Society will be free from “Bad elements”.

My Observations Of KPK..#MirMak

I know many of you have asked me to write my observations of KPK as i have just returned. Another thing many of you are also expecting that i write the way i always have, without any party lines. I belong to no party and have no political affiliation but i appreciate any party doing good for Pakistan. I do not look at Lahore as anything outside Pakistan, thus i appreciate the amazing development Lahore has witnessed. Appreciating Lahore does not make me part of PML N and pointing out the wrongs of PML N does not make me their opposing party either. We all have to appreciate whoever is doing good for Pakistan and encourage them. Nobody can be perfect and only do good, that happens in story books not in real life but if a leader is doing good for Pakistan, at least appreciate that good before pointing out his wrongs. I have no love lost for IK or PTI but it was my first time in 16 years to visit Peshawar and i had my eyes, ears, mind all attentive to see what is happening in this great province. It will be a bit long of an article but i will break it into three parts... First the People of KPK..

The People Of KPK.

I have no words for the hospitality and decency shown to me from even the strangers on the street. The ones who knew nothing about me or my background except the fact that i was from Karachi. An Urdu speaking person from Karachi was given so much respect and shown so much hospitality that all the political myths of a certain party in Karachi were thrown out of the window. What i had always believed about the great Pakhtuns had come true in reality, their simplicity, their love for peace, their efforts to uphold and preserve their centuries old traditions of loving their guests. No matter where i went and no matter whom i met, i received nothing but love and respect. So much so that when the waiters at the hotel openly refuse to take the tips because you are a guest from Karachi. When the KPK police stops us on our way back to Islamabad before we enter the motorway and finds out that we are from Karachi, yes they check the car and do their duty first but a few minutes after checking the car they become our friends and we exchange numbers and take pictures and they insist that we go for dinner with them to their homes. Nowhere did i see a single weapon being carried in public. I did not see a single 4x4 blazing through with other 4x4s full of guards following it. I have seen more weapons and guards in Karachi than an ammunition depot. I saw immense respect for the pedestrians on the street by the drivers who stopped and let them cross the roads. I was expecting gun carrying, shawl wrapped around the faces, hoards of Taliban in convoys in Peshawar and what i saw was, nimble, humble, simple people without any weapons except the most lethal weapon of all to disarm your best enemy...their smiles.

Business Environment.....

It needs great improvement. Yes after years of destruction, mayhem, chaos and terrorism, i was not surprised. The commercial areas needed improvement. But when i spoke to the common vendors on the street they were happy that improvement is coming compared to the days of terrorism. There were more buyers than earlier i was told. Now to the professional businesses...I saw a will within the youth and the older crowd to excel. A will full of strength and hard work. I met the head of the IT Departments, Heads of Entrepreneurship studies at the universities, i met the Economic Zone team, i met the MD of KPITB, and the first thing i found was that the post matched the experience of the people. The MD KPTIB was a Ph.D, a young Ph.D in computer field with years of overseas experience The KPK Economic Zone team was comprised of Bankers, Financial Experts and people who left their cozy jobs in the private sectors to contribute to their province. I also saw a great number of students who already have started their ventures while in school instead of waiting for that "Perfect Funding". There were so many of those start ups who did not seek funding or make excuses and decided to do business with whatever little they had. So much so that a kid started a shoe business online with just 10,000 Rupees and does over a crore in business now. But KPK needs improvement in this arena. KPK needs to speed up the process of revival of business environment even faster. KPK needs to bring in outside advisors and consultants to the economic zones and IT boards to give them a different perspective. More participation is required from people outside KPK and outside Pakistan. A concerted media campaign with facts needs to be launched to promote business in KPK.

Now The Government Performance...

I think many of you were just waiting for this part of the article. Lol. I did not meet a single government official on purpose because i did not want their perspective. I did not want "Them" to convince me that their performance is great. I wanted to gather this data of opinions from the common people of KPK. I wanted to mingle with people on the streets, at the universities, at the restaurants, the drivers, the workers..the common people of Peshawar who will speak honestly. And that i did. Before i go on to tell you what they said, i would also like to tell you that i did not see any amazing infrastructure work screaming improvement in my ears. I was not interested in that much to begin with because to me infrastructure development is great and needed but what is needed more is the improvement in the fields of Health & Education for the common people. So my questions to the people were mostly concentrated on these two fields. And let me tell you without mincing my words that "EVERY" and i mean "EVERY" person i spoke to was all praise for the improvements in the health sector. So much so that they were telling me that they would rather go to a government hospital then to go to the private hospital. And before i asked them these questions i tricked them into telling me which party they belong to. About half of them who praised the amazing improvements in the health sector were not PTI voters. Except one, and i mean only one out of 3 to 400 people i spoke to in groups, all praised the improvement in health care. Secondly on their list of praises was that the education system is getting better. Government schools are adopting the same curriculum as the private schools. Teachers are showing up on time. Qualification of the teachers has improved a lot.

So the 2 subjects i spoke to people about, health and education, i give KPK passing marks with flying colors. Infrastructure needs improvement. Business environment needs much more improvement. But all in all i see KPK on its way to improvement. However slow it may be in other fields, other than health and education but i see improovements.

Now to all the PTI voters, do not for a second think that i agree with IK for his handling of political affairs on a national level. Do not think that i appreciate him changing his stances, recent one, going back to the parliament while calling it illegal for years. I do not appreciate leaders changing their stances. Whatever his political strategies are, are his to handle what comes his way is his business though, my business is the people of Pakistan and their improvement, whichever leader it comes from as long as it comes. So KPK passes in my opinion as a government in the fields of education and health. The rest Allah knows better.

This was NOT a census that counts who is residing where, so that economic resources can be allocated. It was nothing more than a verification drive of NADRA database and that too at an exorbitant expense.

As such this census robbed Karachi of its due resources and political representatives!
Karachi is the second biggest city of Pashtuns, 2nd biggest city of Punjabis, is the largest city of Sindhis and Balochis.

However, all these Punjabis, Sindhis, Balochis, and Pushtuns living in Karachi for decades, using its infrastructure and resources are NOT counted as residents of Karachi if their cnic address is outside Karachi. Similarly Bengalis and Afghanis and other illegal aliens living in Karachi are not counted as residents of Karachi if they do not have nadra card.

Census only counted those who had (1) nadra registered/cnic and (2) whose address was of Karachi. All those residing in Karachi who did not have nadra cnic/registration (Bengalis, Burmese, Afghanis,..) or whose permanent address was not Karachi(immigrants from interior Sindh, Punjab, Pashtuns, Balochs) were not counted.
