Gilgit-Baltistan is not only blessed with extraordinary natural beauty but also with an incredible potential for growth, both in terms of tourism and human development. To further this cause, I propose a forward-thinking initiative that offers free internet access to the people of GB. Specifically, I suggest the following plan:
1. Free Internet Access for 6 Months for All Residents of Gilgit-Baltistan:
Every individual in GB should be provided with six months of free internet access. This will enable people to connect with the global community, learn new skills, and participate in opportunities that can improve their livelihoods. The focus will be on promoting digital literacy, especially among youth, to encourage them to market the region’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
2. Extended Free Internet for 12 Months for Residents Aged 50 and Above:
As part of this initiative, we propose providing one year of free internet to those over the age of 50. This demographic can benefit immensely from learning how to use social media, artificial intelligence (AI), and other digital tools to market GB’s tourist attractions, promote local products, and engage with the global economy. In addition, it will enable them to grow personally and contribute to the digital economy from the comfort of their homes.
Execution Plan:
To ensure the smooth implementation of this proposal, the following steps are suggested:
1. Partnership with Telecom and Internet Providers:
The GB government can collaborate with telecom and internet service providers to set up the infrastructure and secure the bandwidth necessary for this project. Negotiations should be held to provide subsidized or zero-cost services for the period mentioned.
2. User Registration and Verification:
A digital platform can be set up for users to register for free internet. This platform would verify the identities and ages of residents through their CNICs and facilitate easy access to the internet. For older residents, an additional training program can be introduced to assist them with using the internet effectively.
3. Training and Digital Literacy Workshops:
Alongside providing free internet, digital literacy workshops and resources can be rolled out in partnership with local community centers, schools, and universities. Special training for using AI tools and social media can be developed, empowering residents to use the internet productively, especially in promoting tourism and small businesses.
4. Monitoring and Evaluation:
A committee should be set up to oversee the execution of this initiative and track its success. Periodic reviews can help identify challenges and adjust the program to maximize its impact. The ultimate goal will be to ensure that the people of GB are not only connected but also equipped with the skills needed to benefit from this connectivity.
Learning from the Success of Jio in India:
I would also like to draw your attention to a similar strategy that has proven immensely successful in India. When Jio 4G was launched, the company provided free internet for three years to millions of users across the country. This strategic move not only established Jio as the leading telecom provider in India but also transformed the nation’s internet ecosystem. India now stands among the fastest-growing internet economies in the world, and Jio’s visionary approach played a pivotal role in this transformation.
Today, Mukesh Ambani, the owner of Jio, is the richest man in India. Jio’s initiative significantly contributed to the rapid digitalization of the country, fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth. Moreover, India’s IT exports are now worth $130 billion annually, further demonstrating the immense potential of widespread internet access.
I firmly believe that with the right infrastructure and strategy, we can replicate this success in Gilgit-Baltistan. By providing free internet access and empowering the population, we have the opportunity to drive similar growth in IT, tourism, and digital entrepreneurship in GB.
