I graduate from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Lahore in 2009. LUMS had provided me a merit scholarship which covered around 75% of my academic expenses. After graduation, I worked in Islamabad a few years to save up as much as I could for higher education.
I started my MPA at Cornell in January 2013 with a $20,000 annual tuition fellowship amount which covered almost 60% of my total tuition. My time at Cornell has been extremely rewarding but also has tested my resolve to pursue knowledge. When I started, my degree was being funded was through my employer in Pakistan using a grant from an international donor orgaization. However, by the end of that first semester, the funding dried up because the organization scaled back its operations in Pakistan and left me clueless about my Cornell future. I did not give up, managed to secure a loan through a personal contact. I had worked with a faculty member from UCLA, Dr. Stephen Commins, for one of my research projects in Pakistan and he had been a mentor to me ever since. Upon learning my predicament, he offered to co-sign a loan for me and that enabled me to continue for the next two semesters. I was withdrawn from my last semester at Cornell because of the inability to pay my tuition but my on-campus job supervisor, Prof. Max Pfeffer, gave me a temporary full time employment based on my research work with him. This allowed me to continue working on my thesis and my PhD applications as well gathering enough funds required to finish my last semester. When I applied, I got an offer from the University of Chicago in their Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS). This is a one year feeder program in to top tier PhD programs in political science and they have also offered me a generous 50% tuition scholarship.
I am still in the process of getting the funds together for U of Chicago. I am knocking all doors and have started a fund raising campaign as well, the contributions can be made at gofundme.com/z9c228g. I am also looking for possible co-signers (US citizens or Permanent Residents) for study loans as well. I know that the amount I need is too big for one person to co-sign for, so I am only asking people to co-sign for amounts between $5,000-$10,000. I am hopeful that I will be able to reach my goal by the middle of September, as that is when I need to show proof of funding. I have to ask but if anyone who you know and would be willing to co-sign, please do let me know.
