• Hi...

My name is Ami Dar and I am the director of Idealist.org. I started
Idealist in 1995 because ever since I was a boy growing up in Mexico
Ive believed that things dont have to be the way they are, and that
together we should be able to do much more about all the problems we
    see around us.

I still feel this way and I suspect you do as well. Thats why Im
    writing you now.

On Tuesday, March 11, Idealist will launch a new network—online and
on the ground, in cities, villages, schools and workplaces—that
will help people everywhere connect and take action on any issue that
concerns them, locally or globally, online and in person.

The heart of this movement will consist of people all over the world
who want to use every available tool—from social media to a
bulletin board on a village tree—to inspire and catalyze action and
    collaboration in their own communities.

If this is you, if you like new ideas and you enjoy connecting dots
and people, I hope you can join us.

Well start with a live online presentation, take your questions, and
then start building this movement together.

To accommodate people in every time zone, well do this twice, first
on March 11 at Noon EST (17:00 GMT), and then again that evening at
11:00 pm EST (4:00 am GMT on the 12th).

For more details about this event, to sign up, and to see how other
people around the world are responding, please click on this link:

And for a bit more about why I think real change is possible, and why
we need your voice in this conversation, please click here:

Lastly, if you know other people who should also be at this table,
    please invite them too.

Thank you, and all the best to you and yours in 2014!

  • Good design (and serial numbers) by Seth Godin

Bosch puts the serial number for its dishwashers on the side of the door, not the top. Which means that 50% of the time, if the device is mounted in a corner, its impossible to see the serial number.

Most companies use 0 and o and O in their serial numbers, as well as 1 and I. If they used nothing but letters, words in fact, thered be no confusion. Make a list of 1000 short words, use each word twice and you have a million numbers. FISHY-LASSO, for example. Easy to remember, hard to screw up.

And there might be a reason to use really small type, but its hard for me to understand why.

Of course, serial numbers are merely a symptom. Im not particularly ranting about them. Design is about function. Everything we do has a job, and if its designed properly, the job will get done well.

When we think about what might go wrong, were more likely to design something that goes right.

CCTV talked to Jack Ma, Chinas legendary E-commerce pioneer.

"We have been working on Taobao for more than a decade and now have some 300 million users. However, the majority of Chinese are living in rural areas and that is a great opportunity. With no Internet, you can hardly dig its potential. Chinese farmers all have a phone in their hands even before they really know what a computer is. And the point is now most mobiles can function as computers. So I think if we can reform the economy and the means of production in rural areas with E-commerce technology, we will make a great contribution to our country," Ma said.

Not bound by the domestic market, Ma and Alibaba have already begun to eye the global internet market.

"One of our main ideas is that Alibaba will do what local companies cant do in their countries. We will not steal local companies livelihood, but to help them become better. If our Chinese companies can benefit local customers, then we are doing the real globalization, otherwise it will become a sort of Sinolization," Ma said.

In addition, Ma said he hopes more Chinese companies will arise in the near future. He hopes the companies can represent Chinas values and culture, as well as its youths enterprising spirit and ability to innovate.

  • Ranjan Das, CEO and MD of SAP-Indian subcontinent died after a massive cardiac arrest in Mumbai recently.
One of the youngest CEOs, he was only 42.

    What killed Ranjan Das?

He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner.

After his workout, he collapsed with a massive heart attack and died. He is survived by his wife and two very young kids.

It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India. However, it was even more disastrous for runners.

The question arises as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumbed to a heart attack at 42 years of age.

    What is the real reason?

Everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan used to manage with 4-5 hours of sleep.

In an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program ‘Boss day out’, Ranjan Das himself admitted that he sleeps less and would love to get more sleep.

Short sleep duration (<5 or 5-6 hours) increases risk for high BP by 350% to 500% compared to those who slept longer than 6 hours per night.

Young people (25-49 years of age) are twice as likely to get high BP if they sleep less.

Individuals who sleep less than 5 hours a night have a 3-fold increased risk of heart attacks.

Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (CRP). They also cause cancer, arthritis and heart disease.

Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 8% increase in heart disease.

    What is ideal sleep?

In brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter helps in physical repair and rebuilding.

No wonder when one wakes up with an alarm clock after 5-6 hours of sleep, he/she is mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of REM sleep).

And if somebody has slept for less than 5 hours, the body is in a complete physical mess (lack of non-REM sleep), the person is tired throughout the day and immunity is way down.

    In conclusion:
Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper food, exercising, maintaining proper weight. But he missed getting proper and adequate sleep, minimum 7 hours. That killed him.

We are playing with fire if we are sleeping less than 7 hours even if we have low stress.

Do not set your alarm clock under 7 hours.

    Ranjan Das is not alone.

Do Share it with all the Good People In ur Life...

PURPOSE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN NEED…it does not matter where we are now....all that matters is where we plan to go...and what we need to do... to get there...life is all about our choices...we can never make the same mistake twice...the second time we make...it’s no longer a mistake...its a choice...so let us choose our actions and our words carefully...Happy Monday and have a lovely week
