  • Open letter to Al-Khidmat Foundation Islamabad from Abrar Ul Haq

    Dear Sir, Assalam Alaikum.
This is Abrar-Ul-Haq, from Jacobabad. I am engineering student at NUST, Islamabad and a social worker.
First of all I would like to congratulate you for the work your organization, Al-Khidmat is doing all over the country in general and Sindh in Particular.
I have been closely watching the activities of Al-Khidmat in Jacobabad. On the one hand, I appreciate the work specially in the domains of Healthcare and Disaster Management and on the occasions of Ramadan and Eid etc. But on the other hand you must admit it that the Al-Khidmat Jacobabad is not as active as the rest of the Districts. A simple example is Al-Khidmat Jacobabad is owning a plot worth Rupees 40 Lac for hospital and there are doing nothing with it.
Coming on your general organization structure, You know Sir, innovation in any organization is a very essential element. I appreciate that all the organizations are doing but someone needs to think out of the box.
In this regard, I am requesting your organization to sponsor a couple of events here in Jacobabad. Had it been Islamabad, crowd funding would have been enough to support the projects but its Jacobabad and you know people here rather need more than donating.
First, project is “Wall of Kindness”. The idea might sound a classical idea to you but Sir you know people here don’t just accept the change immediately. So this will serve good as establishing our roots, introducing that there also exist something known as helping others and community service. This first project is like a marketing strategy for your next project. I plan to start this before 11 August before I go to Dubai.
Before I step towards introducing the next project, I would like to put that majority of our youth (especially in lower Sindh) has no work to do so called wanderers which latter go to some wrong directions like robbery and theft etc.
I thought, Why not to assign them some right direction some good work to do? I will tell how we can, in a moment.
In the next project, actually I want to start the trend of community service through a Intercity Community Service Competition where such people do some acts of community service and shoot a 5 minute video and top 3 get a cash price. And people here will complete this task for a handsome amount of cash prize.
I believe this is really gonna be at least a spark to the fire You, I and we all really want to see in community, and in our youth.
I hope you to be interested in such acts of Kindness for Humanity, Sir.
Sir, If you find this little effort to change interesting, You can send me your email address and/or contact as well.
    Jazak ALLAH.

  • Reimagining Pakistan’s Railway Stations as Social and Economic Hubs

    By Rehan Allahwala —

Railway stations are often the heart of a city, yet in most parts of Pakistan, they remain dull, noisy, and underutilized spaces. What if we could transform these stations into something beautiful, welcoming, and socially vibrant? Imagine walking into your local railway station not just to catch a train — but to meet friends, work remotely, sip good coffee, and connect to free WiFi.

This is not just a dream — it’s a vision that can reshape the social and economic fabric of Pakistan.

The Vision: A Lounge for Every Station

Every railway station — from Karachi to Gilgit — can become a community hub. Just like airports have CIPs and lounges, railway stations can host cafeterias, coffee shops, and comfortable lounges open to both travelers and local citizens.

In towns like Chunian, Jacobabad, or Changsha, there is often no decent place to sit with friends, hold a business meeting, or work with a laptop over coffee. The railway can change that.

    These stations can have:
    • Air-conditioned lounges with WiFi and clean restrooms.
    • Coffee shops and snack bars offering local and international options.
    • Small coworking corners for freelancers, students, and travelers.
    • Mini reading libraries and local product showcases.

    The Smart Contract Model

The government or Pakistan Railways can adopt a franchise or contract-based model.
When a company applies for a contract at a major station like Hyderabad or Lahore, they must commit to developing 10 smaller stations in less profitable areas such as Sanghar, Mian Channu, or Rohri.

    This ensures:
    • Every region gets development, not just the big cities.
    • The aesthetic and cleanliness standards improve nationwide.
    • Smaller towns gain social infrastructure that encourages tourism and pride.

    The Impact: Connectivity Beyond Trains

This transformation will do more than beautify the stations. It will:
    • Create jobs for baristas, cleaners, and hospitality staff.
    • Attract small business owners to open stalls and mini cafés.
    • Provide safe and clean spaces for women, students, and families.
    • Offer free WiFi, making stations digital learning zones.
    • Strengthen civic pride, as stations become symbols of progress and hospitality.

When railway stations become modern lounges, they bring dignity and joy to daily travel. They become symbols of connection — not just between cities, but between people.

The Future of Pakistan’s Public Spaces

Just like airports across the world have become meeting hubs, Pakistan’s railway network can become a national network of social innovation. These stations can host youth meetups, book clubs, AI workshops, and small concerts — reviving community culture.

With 1,184 railway stations across the country, Pakistan already has a nationwide network waiting to be awakened. All we need is visionary policy, entrepreneurial execution, and design that puts people first.

    In short:
The train station of the future is not just a place to catch a train —
It’s a place to catch ideas, conversations, and possibilities.
