Being a Mum of a now adult son who was diagnosed in preschool, she has many years of experience and now specialises in helping other parents and caregivers of children who are neurodiverse or who may have special needs.

She teaches all caregivers, parents, and educators to develop positive and heart centred relationships and to help nurture, grow emotional stability and social connection with their children. As Parents of special needs, and all children, growing and maintaining positive and healthy relationships throughout childhood and into adulthood is imperative.

Lillian is also an Advanced Trainer in the ‘Nurtured Heart Approach’ (NHA) which is a beautiful heart centred way of communicating and relation-shipping that she believes EVERY family should understand and learn. She LOVES to share her passion for NHA with as many families as possible!

  • The Silent Poison: How Chronic Stress Destroys the Brain Without Us Knowing

And why people in poverty or illness need mental health support even more than medicine or money.

Real-World Scenario: The Everyday Life of Toxic Stress

Imagine this life — which millions live every day:
    • Your father has been sick in bed for two years. You’re his caregiver, nurse, and breadwinner.
    • You live in a broken-down neighborhood where there’s garbage in the streets, water once a week, and frequent power cuts.
    • You earn on daily wages. If you don’t work, you don’t eat. There’s no safety net, no backup.
    • Your child wants new shoes. You want to say yes. But there’s only enough money for rice and lentils.
    • You hear about suicide, theft, or violence regularly in your area. The system around you is failing — but you must survive.

Now imagine living like this for months, years, even decades.

You’re not always crying. You’re not yelling. But inside?

Your brain is fighting for its life — every single day.

This is chronic toxic stress — and it’s killing your mental clarity, your peace, and even your physical health — slowly and silently.

The Science: What Toxic Stress Does to Your Brain and Body

Toxic stress is a condition described by Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child and the World Health Organization (WHO) as the prolonged activation of the body’s stress response system without adequate support.

It’s not ordinary stress. It’s unresolved, unrelenting, and often invisible to the person suffering.

Here’s how it damages your brain:
    1. Amygdala (emotional alarm center) becomes overactive
→ You become jumpy, fearful, irritable.
→ Small problems feel like disasters.
    2. Prefrontal Cortex (decision-making area) weakens
→ You lose focus. Make poor financial or family decisions. Can’t plan or think clearly.
→ You may self-sabotage without knowing why.
    3. Hippocampus (memory and learning) shrinks
→ You struggle to remember things, learn new skills, or stay calm.
→ It affects school, work, parenting.
    4. Immune system and heart weaken
→ People with toxic stress have higher risk of diabetes, blood pressure, depression, and heart attacks, according to the American Psychological Association (APA).

The Worst Part: Most People Don’t Even Know It’s Happening

    You may say:
    • “I’m just tired.”
    • “I’m just unlucky.”
    • “It’s life. Everyone struggles.”

But this is not just normal tiredness.
It’s neurological trauma caused by long-term environmental pressure.

Most people living in poverty, illness, war, displacement, or broken families suffer from undiagnosed toxic stress, which:
    • Makes them feel stuck in life
    • Makes them emotionally numb or explosive
    • Makes them blame themselves for being lazy or weak
    • When in reality, their brain is under chemical and cognitive attack

Can It Be Healed? Yes — but Only Through Awareness + Action

Here’s what science and psychology recommend:

    1. Awareness First

    Start by acknowledging:
“I am not weak. I am under pressure. My brain needs help.”

This mental shift is powerful — it breaks shame and opens the door to healing.

    2. Micro-Healing Habits (Backed by Neuroscience)
    • Deep breathing lowers cortisol (stress hormone) in 5 minutes
    • 15 minutes of silence daily resets the nervous system
    • Walking in nature or sun activates serotonin (mood stabilizer)
    • Journaling or talking to a friend releases emotional weight
    • 8 hours of sleep repairs the prefrontal cortex

Even in poverty or illness, small moments of peace are neurologically healing.

    3. Social Connection = Mental Protection

Having one trusted person to talk to regularly can lower the risk of depression by up to 40%, according to a 2022 study by Harvard Medical School.

Final Thought: You’re Not Lazy. You’re Overloaded.

Most people in poverty are told:
    “Work harder.”
    “Think positive.”
    “Be grateful.”

    But the truth is:
You’re not broken. You’re exhausted. You’re overloaded. Your brain is carrying too much.

We don’t just need jobs or education.
    We need mental recovery.
We need spaces where the nervous system can breathe again.

So if you or someone you love lives with illness, poverty, or constant stress — know this:

    Their brain is not okay.
    They’re not weak — they’re wounded.
And just like a broken bone, a stressed brain can heal — with rest, love, and support.

  • Theory of Mind (ToM) is the ability to understand that other people have their own minds — with different thoughts, beliefs, feelings, intentions, and knowledge — which may be different from yours.

    In short:

I know that you think, and I know that what you think may not be what I think.

    In very simple words

Theory of Mind is the skill that lets you:
    • Guess what someone else is thinking
    • Understand why they behaved a certain way
    • Realize that people can be wrong, confused, pretending, or hiding something

    Simple everyday examples

    Example 1: Hidden object

You put your phone on the table.
    You leave the room.
Someone moves the phone into a drawer.

    When you come back:
    • You think the phone is on the table
    • They know it’s in the drawer

Understanding this difference = Theory of Mind

A baby or very young child often assumes:

“If I know it, everyone knows it.”

An adult with developed ToM knows:

“Others may not know what I know.”

    Example 2: Feelings

Your friend smiles, but you notice they are quiet.

    Without Theory of Mind:
    • “They’re smiling, so they’re happy.”

    With Theory of Mind:
    • “They might be smiling, but feeling sad inside.”

    Example 3: Business / leadership

A leader with strong Theory of Mind asks:
    • “How will my team interpret this message?”
    • “What does this customer really want, not what I want?”

    A leader without it says:
    • “It’s obvious. Why don’t they understand?”

When does Theory of Mind develop?
    • Starts around age 3–5
    • Continues developing through childhood
    • Becomes very sophisticated in adulthood

    Some people:
    • Develop it very strongly (great leaders, teachers, negotiators)
    • Struggle with it (can happen in autism, extreme stress, trauma, or poor social learning)

Why Theory of Mind is extremely important

    It affects:
    Communication
    Empathy
    Teaching
    Leadership
    Negotiation
    Parenting
    Sales & marketing
    Conflict resolution

    Without Theory of Mind:
    • People feel misunderstood
    • Arguments increase
    • Teaching fails
    • Leadership breaks

    Theory of Mind vs Intelligence

    Very important point:

You can be highly intelligent and still have weak Theory of Mind.

    Many geniuses struggle socially because:
    • They assume others think like them
    • They overestimate others’ understanding

Strong Theory of Mind sounds like:
    • “From their point of view…”
    • “They might be feeling…”
    • “What do they believe right now?”
    • “What information do they not have?”
